Sharp and fast: sensors and switches based on polymer brushes with adsorption-active minority chains.

2014

We propose a design for polymer-based sensors and switches with sharp switching transition and fast response time. The switching mechanism involves a radical change in the conformations of adsorption-active minority chains in a brush. Such transitions can be induced by a temperature change of only about ten degrees, and the characteristic time of the conformational change is less than a second. We present an analytical theory for these switches and support it by self-consistent field calculations and Brownian dynamics simulations.

Cell uptake enhancement of folate targeted polymer coated magnetic nanoparticles.

2013

Dual targeted drug delivery systems represent a potential platform for developing efficient vector to tumor sites. In this study we evaluated a folate- and magnetic-targeted nanocarriers based on 10 nm iron oxide nanodomais coated with the properly synthesized and characterized folic acid (FA)-functionalized amphiphilic copolymer PHEA-PLA-PEG-FA. FA was chemically conjugated to one end of diamino-polyethylene glycol of 2000 Da, in order to ensure its exposition on the polymer coated magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs-FA). The prepared nanoparticles have been exhaustively characterized by different methods, including DLS, SEM, FT-IR and magnetic measurements. Magnetic nanoparticles showed dimensio…

Polymer-coated reversed-phase packings with controlled hydrophobic properties

1992

Abstract We have designed and synthesized novel reversed-phase packings of non-porous and porous polymethacrylate-coated silicas. By varying the hydrophobicity of the polymer coating, selective unfolding of polypeptides may be achieved, thus enabling manipulation of the chromatographic profile. This study characterizes these packings through their employment for separations of model synthetic peptides of defined secondary, tertiary and quaternary structure. Thus, the packings were applied to the reversed-phase separation α-helical amphipathic and non-amphipathic peptides of the same amino acid composition but different sequences. In addition, selective unfolding of model to-stranded α-helic…

Polymer-coated reversed-phase packings in high-performance liquid chromatography

1993

The synthesis and properties of polymer-coated RP stationary phases are reviewed. The sorbents are classified according to the method of synthesis. More flexibility in the tailoring of polymer-coated packings is noted. The impact of the polymer coating on the porosity of the oxides to be modified and their chromatographic properties is discussed.
